The Need for Individualized Healthcare

As a society, we have come to rely on traditional Western medicine as the primary means of treating illness and maintaining good health. However, it is important to recognize that there are some shortcomings to this approach to healthcare.

Provider-patient interactions are shifting from collaborative to transactional. A common complaint among patients is the inadequate length of time spent with their healthcare provider. This is especially common in primary care. With increasing pressure to see larger volumes of patients each day, providers are spending less quality time with their patients than ever. Patients often leave their appointments feeling frustrated because they didn’t have the opportunity to fully communicate their concerns or ask questions.

Shorter appointment times make it challenging to build meaningful provider-patient relationships. Stronger trust and confidence in healthcare providers increase the likelihood that patients will be open and honest. This can be of great value to both parties; the healthcare provider may be able to avoid unnecessary testing and determine a more effective care plan, while the patient is treated more efficiently and potentially feels better in less time.

Another issue with traditional Western medicine: insurance companies have a significant influence on patient care and treatment. While a healthcare provider may recommend a care plan with their patient’s best interests in mind, the insurance carriers determine which treatments and procedures are medically necessary. This is frustrating for both patients and providers alike. It can prevent patients from receiving the most effective treatment.

Healthcare and medicine are more effective in an individualized setting. A one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare can result in missed diagnoses and delayed care. While traditional Western medicine has its share of benefits, it is important to be aware of its limitations and to consider other options, such as holistic and alternative medicine, when appropriate. By being informed and proactive in our own healthcare, we can work towards finding the best possible treatment and care options for our individual needs.
